First, though, I passed through the nitroglycerin section &#8211; it&#8217;s a bizarre landscape of steep hills, tunnels, berms and these corrugated-iron blast walls:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/3965613946\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2635\/3965613946_01e30a741a.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Nitroglycerin was transported along open lead-lined troughs &#8211; it just ran down under gravity as pumping it would be a really bad idea. In the above picture you can see the remains of a bridge which carried the NG over a train line &#8211; and some of the wooden trough supports are still in place:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/3964845789\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2637\/3964845789_4008cdccc9.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Right, onto the blackpowder works, and an incorporating mill (I think):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/3965644334\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3521\/3965644334_ae63685dac.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next, in a very heavy-duty bunker with camouflage netting still in place, a huge hydraulic press, probably used for pressing gunpowder cake before incorporation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/3965649184\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2456\/3965649184_0a0f1a5562.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/3964885781\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2558\/3964885781_28628ebb74.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Onto a powder magazine &#8211; there used to be dozens of these, each inside it&#8217;s own berm, but the lightly-built buildings have mostly gone leaving only the ring of soil. This one, unusually, was still intact, and even had the markings on the floor where boxes were stacked.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/3965696158\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2499\/3965696158_148ebe6906.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next, the testing station, and the detonator labs &#8211; there were shoes scattered everywhere. In explosive factories, workers wore rubber or leather overshoes to prevent sparks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/3965722192\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2495\/3965722192_654bb2f0bd.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/3964953379\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2428\/3964953379_7a55e10cfe.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/3964944631\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2424\/3964944631_e7048def9c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Onto the ballistic mortars &#8211; I&#8217;ve photographed these before, but I can never get enough of these:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/3965743512\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2471\/3965743512_9d3bbe40ae.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/3964974211\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3486\/3964974211_28d97acf86.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A new find, though, crammed in the back of a drawer &#8211; a slide-rule for working out the power of an explosive from the angle of the ballistic mortar.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/3964988649\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2520\/3964988649_00ee07aa35.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In one room of the labs is box after box of glass plates &#8211; most are not that interesting (high-speed images of explosions) but some are very cool &#8211; with a portable lightbox I went through every box.
