{"id":49,"date":"2009-10-04T18:07:59","date_gmt":"2009-10-04T18:07:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.catchingphotons.co.uk\/blog\/?p=49"},"modified":"2013-11-17T22:08:23","modified_gmt":"2013-11-17T22:08:23","slug":"fettykil-paper-mill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/catchingphotons.co.uk\/blog\/paper-mills\/fettykil-paper-mill\/","title":{"rendered":"Fettykil Paper Mill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ho hum &#8211; another Sunday morning, another Fife paper mill \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>Smith Anderson &amp; Co had been making paper at it&#8217;s Fettykill (or perhaps Fettykil) mill since 1859. From the start, the company specialised in paper bags and packaging &#8211; Charles Anderson himself invented an automated paper bag making machine.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, the papermaking business went into receivership &#8211; the parent company still makes packaging, but they don&#8217;t make their own paper any more, so the Fettykill mill stands empty. A yankee dryer machine uses one giant steam-heated roller to dry the paper instead of a series of small rollers.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Fettykill 15 (by Ben Cooper)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/3979805505\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Fettykill 15 (by Ben Cooper)\" alt=\"Fettykill 15 (by Ben Cooper)\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3486\/3979805505_06217a24d5.jpg\" width=\"416\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A closer look at a yankee dryer. This roller weighs 80-100 tons, and must be 20 feet in diameter. I really liked this mill because the machines were in a big shed &#8211; you could see all of them at once.
