The original villa was surrounded on two sides by later larger additions in 1858, and a large front addition by James Thomson in 1890. The house was bought by Lanarkshire Council in 1920 to use as a hospital for children, and it remained a hospital until 2005.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/7867828166\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8427\/7867828166_091848788e_z.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/7867835440\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7137\/7867835440_21795d1bc2_z.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/7867863118\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8287\/7867863118_19f98aaf70_z.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the highlights of the house is the two fantastic spiral staircases &#8211;
