The first one I explored was the limestone mine above Corrie. The mine follows a seam down at about 45 degrees, with several entrances. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/8709388217\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8130\/8709388217_715b7af543_c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/8709396609\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8552\/8709396609_0f02a2f977_c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/8709402419\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8407\/8709402419_771a72c075_c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s some evidence of trackways on the surface, and some underground too &#8211; this was about 200m in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/8709408507\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8123\/8709408507_fa523d48df_c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Much of the mine is distinctly dodgy, though &#8211; lots of evidence of fresh rockfall, and in some places the limestone was just hanging off the ceiling &#8211; I was pretty nervous sitting under this <img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Smile\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.28dayslater.co.uk\/forums\/images\/smilies\/smile.gif\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/8709413343\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8139\/8709413343_b92245008f_c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the surface, there are some derelict lime furnaces:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/8710537850\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8419\/8710537850_54d37530ab_c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And the bottom mine is used for storage:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/8710542106\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8267\/8710542106_c843478e12_c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next, up in Glen Sannox, is a barytes mine that first operated in the 1860s before closing and reopening briefly around WWI.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/8709439299\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8416\/8709439299_03b1177d89_c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The mine follows a near-vertical fault &#8211; the lowest adit is very flooded.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/8709443635\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8538\/8709443635_4cb6c168d4_c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next one up looks promising, though waders will be needed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/8710545368\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8113\/8710545368_a567d26de8_c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the one above that was do-able.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/8710559100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8264\/8710559100_ca7e3c3276_c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/8710555898\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8394\/8710555898_3b8d239b37_c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/8710553922\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8395\/8710553922_b104f87103_c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, a view from the top adit, showing the trackway leading to the middle adit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cycleologist\/8710547296\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8258\/8710547296_2b576afcd8_c.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All images:<\/p>\n<p>[fsg_gallery id=&#8221;7&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Corrie and Sannox are two villages next to each other on the Northeast coast of the island &#8211; the mines aren&#8217;t linked, though.
