I thought I’d done a report on this, but I guess not – covered some parts of Stobhill Hospital a while ago, but didn’t manage to get into any of the buildings. That changed, and found out a way into the X-Ray department.
So, anyway – Stobhill is a partly-live hospital in the North-East of Glasgow. There are some lovely big steam tunnels:
Birkwood House started as a Georgian villa built at the end of the 18th Century for the Mackirdy family. The original villa was surrounded on two sides by later larger additions in 1858, and a large front addition by James Thomson in 1890. The house was bought by Lanarkshire Council in 1920 to use as a hospital for children, and it remained a hospital until 2005. Continue reading
Glasgow’s Stobhill Hospital is a lovely old Victorian hospital, and is a real mish-mash of uses and buildings – some parts are almost cottage hospital like, some parts are traditional corridors-and-wards, and there are also some brand new high tech buildings. The main Victorian bit – the general hospital – closed at the beginning of the year.
Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital is being hugely expanded and rebuilt, with about £1bn being spent to consolidate the city’s hospital care. The cranes on this site have tempted me for ages, but they’re rather secure – the building itself, however, is not 😉
Built in 1874, this lovely old hospital was used for geriatric and adult psychiatric patients. Continue reading
Gartloch was a beautiful Victorian general hospital, built in 1889 – it closed in 1996, and parts have now been redeveloped into the usual soulless executive village. Some bits are still untouched – the development has stalled.
Another day, another Welsh asylum – and what a difference from Talgarth. On the outside, Denbigh is an absolutely stunning building – it could easily be a posh country hotel. Inside, it’s a mess – massive holes in the floor, lots of decay and demolition. Still quite photogernic, though…
Talgarth Asylum in Wales has been partly demolished – it’s a lovely set of buildings, though, still in mostly pretty good shape…
This little hospital near Glasgow cared for chronically ill patients from 1876 to it’s closure in 1995. The condition is now ruinous – you have to be very careful as the floors are falling in all over the place.
